Dinner at the Jervois Steakhouse

When we were trying to decide where to stay in Queenstown, it was so difficult to choose between all of the options available.  We knew we wanted a small apartment, if possible, as we were planning to be here for 7 nights.  But for once, airbnb.com let me down, as most of the options available were five bedroom + mansions.  Not needing QUITE that much space, we opted for a smaller, one bedroom apartment, slightly further out from town, but right on the side of the lake, and by the Queenstown walking track, which leads straight into town.  If we are lazy and don't get up super early (which we don't - it IS a vacation, after all!!), then we see runners, bikers, dog walkers etc. out enjoying the track all day.  It actually is a 20 mile plus track and we hope to bike it as an out and back, maybe tomorrow.

On Monday night, after our afternoon of wine tasting, we came back to the Rees, where our apartment is, and made a booking for a steakhouse in town for dinner that night.  I had the bright idea that we should walk there, since it was only 20 minutes or so on this Queenstown track.  Well, apparently, the 20 minutes is into Queenstown, but not into the center of the downtown area, which is where our restaurant was.  Also, I had glanced at a map to see where the restaurant was, but I hadn't memorized it, and I certainly hadn't brought a copy of the map, or even the address, with me.  Oops.  We tried asking for directions, but as no-one in Queenstown is actually FROM Queenstown, we got lots of blank looks and shrugs, although people tried to be as helpful as they could!  After a few (okay a lot) of wrong turns and a couple of misadventures, we finally found our way there, almost half an hour late.  Since our reservation had been hard to get, we were lucky they were holding our table for us.  But the meal was well worth the extra steps!  We shared a caesar salad to start, and then Billy had the rack of lamb while I had the venison.  We shared sides of truffled mashed potatoes, creamed corn and candied kumara, or sweet potato.  The kumara was like dessert, so we skipped that course and took a taxi home.  For some reason, Billy didn't seem to think walking back was a good idea!! :)

I neglected to take photos of the food, horrible food blogger that I am, but here is a shot of us, all dressed up in our fancy best.  Did I mention I made Billy do this hour long walk in his dress shoes??!!  Oops...
